    1. Well researched. Prof. Mattei tells the history of the council, its proximate and distance precursors, the pertinent debates session by session and schema by schema, and the all too familiar age is destruction which followed. This book fills in many of the gaps left in "The Rhine Flows into the Tiber". A most necessary and invaluable contribution to understanding the currents still at work in the present day which are still sustaining rather than healing the crisis.Extensive quotes and footnotes [...]

    2. Fascinating and deeply depressing. The comparisons of the Council to the Estates-General were extremely interesting and, to my eyes, apt. The writings of the French counter-revolutionaries might therefore make a good companion read.

    3. Fascinating look at the strategies of how each side of the council evolved and hijacked the 2nd Vatican Council.
